The large husky stretched slowly as the rising spring sun began to warm his fur. He had slept under some trees as a light rain fell on the city last night. Now the rain had already dried and a light breeze ruffled his still-shedding fur. The dog licked his lips in anticipation for the day, going over the plans he had made the night before. Firstly, he had to find some food. Sniffing around he could already tell the human restaurants were opened and serving the lunch rush. If only he could walk in and get food as easily as the no-furred beasts did.
Sniffing again Galax was able to catch the faint scent of squirrel underneath the stronger stench of asphalt and leftover liquor. He followed the smell, staying along the outskirts of the park and away from the stone paths humans liked to travel. His frost blue eyes flickered back and forth, trying to find signs of the tiny movement of prey. The scent grew stronger as he neared a tall elm tree, still partly barren from the previous winter. He began to worry that the squirrel was hiding up in the tree, but the worry dissipated as he saw the bushy creature digging around the base of the tree.
Galax crouched and tensed. He was never much of a hunter and his pose looked awkward, but he was always quick on his feet and felt confident with stalking down prey. He edged closer to the squirrel until he was 10 yards. The squirrel continued to dig, oblivious to the large dog about to come down on it. Galax took a deep breath and leaped, kicking up dead leaves and dirt as he pushed away from the ground. The squirrel heard the kick before it saw the dog and dashed towards the elm, escaping just as the dog snapped for its tail. "Damn it," snarled Galax, looking up the tree at the chattering squirrel. "I don't have time to be hunting for more food now!"
